Touring with the Lions Down Under Ep1

2020-02-28

Media Manager Annemie Bester will be giving you a birds’ eye view of being on tour with the Emirates Lions up close and personal.

The Lions returned to their base in Kings Cross (Sydney) on Saturday morning after their loss against the Waratahs the previous night. The match was played in the beautiful Bankwest Stadium in Paramatta which is about 40 minutes by minibus from their base.

It is a very impressive stadium (brand new as it was built a year ago) with state of the art facilities.

The team moved to a new hotel in Paramatta on Friday morning ahead of the game. After the match they had a get together in the team room of the hotel and after the breakfast this morning (Saturday) departed for their hotel in Kings Cross.

Vincent Tshituka went for a scan on his ankle after the game and returned to the hotel with the sad news that he had to return to South Africa due to a grade 3 sprain.

After a very physical bone-crunching match the bodies were sore and some had really bad stud marks and sore muscles this morning.

Dr Rob Collins, team doctor, was a busy man handing out pills, ointments and advice to get everyone back in tip top shape while team physio Preven Appelsamy and massage therapist Ram Khumalo worked hard to soothe the aches and pains.

The team leaves for Melbourne on Sunday morning and a hard gym session is planned for the afternoon when they arrive at their new home in preparation for their match against the Rebels on Saturday.

Rupert Oberholster, the strength and conditioning coach, called a team meeting to warn everyone of the tough session that awaited them on Sunday and gave some advice on keeping hydrated, getting enough rest and eating the correct food.

Team manager Mustapha Boomgaard was quick to get the rooms sorted out and made the flight arrangements for Tshituka.

The rest of the management were all going through emails regarding possible citings and analyzing video footage of the game.

The 2020's Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival is currently on the go and the city is bustling with the familiar rainbow colours which signifies the LGTBQAIA community. There is a wonderful vibe and excitement with a big parade happening late on Saturday afternoon and everyone is looking forward to this experience as it is regarded as the second biggest Gay Mardi Gras in the world, second to Rio.
