LRC deeply saddened by passing of Landman
2020-03-11
Piet Landman harvested rugby.
The official statistician of Transvaal and later Lions rugby passed away suddenly last Saturday morning at the relatively young age of 58 after being diagnosed with cancer only a fortnight ago.
Piet's work was more a calling than anything else. He started recording stats while still at school, writing every team and every first class game by hand long before computers.
It was the late Doc Louis Luyt who appointed him and for many years he grafted away on a computer that the Doc gave him.
He will always be remember for his dry sense of humour.
Even while he was sick (and probably didn’t know it) his stats on the Lions landed at everyone’s desks long before they reported for duty on a Monday morning.
But then he passed only hours before his beloved team played against the Rebels last Saturday.
He and his work will be missed by many and he will definitely leave a void.
One of our colleagues summed him up this week: “Piet was a good man.”
